about

"TPK - The Pathfinder Konzert" is built on subverting expectations in unusual ways. Just look at its title. Everyone expects TPK to mean Total Party Kill, and those who expect that include me - but it stands for something different here, as evident by the relatively out-of-place, shoehorned German-looking wording to get the point across.

Thematically, "TPK" is still a classifying term to evoke what this collection of tracks is meant to be for (tabletop RPGs!) but musically, it's not at all what most campaign music might end up being.

From the chamber-ensemble track "Historia" to the immense symphonic undertakings of "Dragonqueen's Elegy" and "Lighthouse Blazing," the album gives some indication of its roots in a genre of game...but it doesn't stay in keeping with epic orchestral ideas that populate many fantasy games I've been in. This album is what happens when you take your campaign soundtrack and try to approach more video-gamey sounds!

Not for everyone, I'm sure, and I don't claim it is! But every table is different, so if you find yourself thinking "man I really want some melodic and symphonic metal for this boss..." you know what must be done.

Happy TPK-ing, game masters. ;]
